A bold and retro t-shirt design for Penny Lane's annual design competition.
When I heard that Penny Lane Records, an institution in the Christchurch music scene, was taking submissions for its annual t-shirt design competition, I was excited to flex my creative muscles and go all out on an over the top design that I wouldn't normally have the opportunity to present.
I'm a bit of a music geek, I love funk, soul, disco and jazz. When thinking about the kind of over the top designs I might be able to muster, my mind went to Afro Beat records of the 70's. Couple with this the old style gig posters for funk & soul artists. Minimal colour palette, over the top, exotic imagery, crazy typefaces. All those bizarre retro fonts that I had been hoarding  would finally see the light of day!
My t-shirt design was picked up by Penny Lane that year, which was printed in two colour ways. I'm told that they had completely sold out of my design before the following year's competition came around.
